Omega 3: The Essential Building Blocks

Brain Development & Function

DHA is a core structural component and building-block of a child’s brain. It is leveraged for overall brain development from a pregnant mother’s 2nd term through the child’s teenage years. DHA makes up 15% to 20% of the brains cerebral cortex (area of the brain responsible for many cognitive functions, such as working memory) and 30% of the structural fats within the gray matter of the brain.

Just as with the brain, DHA is also a structural component and building block of the eyes. DHA is naturally concentrated in the retina of the eye (layer of tissue that lines the inside of the eye and receives the image formed by the lens) and is thought to promote healthy retinal function. DHA is not only a requirement to build the brain, research has shown to be crucial to cognitive performance and overall brain function.

A low level of DHA intake has been found to hinder a child’s reading ability, memory, and behavior; as well as increasing behavioral disorders, such as ADHD.
Studies have found that infants given DHA supplementation had higher cognitive performance in the later years of their childhood. The test subjects were found to score higher in intelligence testing, vocabulary, and rule learning.
